Why this vid kicks ass:  Such a perfect song for the characters and the show. Nicely edited with a slew of terrific clips of our outlaw duo. For fans of the show, the video will evoke a schload of memories. For those of you who've never seen the show, after watching this you'll understand why it's still a cult favorite - a lot of the reasons having to do with adorable dimples, tight pants and gorgeous smiles.

Why this vid kicks ass: I just can't get enough of this video. It's Janette-centric but one of the things I love about it  is the decision to focus on the relationship between Janette and LaCroix. The vidder uses some extremely striking clips of Janette and LaCroix both together and individually.

Yet I think when you get into an exploration of Janette and LaCroix' s relationship, you can't really look at it without looking at the impact that Nick's introduction to their relationship has had. The creation of a son pretty much displaced Janette as the favored "child" and now sets her in the role of someone who is used as a means to control the reluctant third.  There are several great and very isolating shots of Janette observing the countless power struggles between Nick and LaCroix. Every time I see the video I find something new to love about it. It's that good.

Author’s Note: This is a bit of fluff I wrote today (Christmas 2009), having just got the idea last night. It’s part of my “Other Egg of the Phoenix” series, but written out of order, and contains a few references to stories I haven’t written yet. Hopefully, it’ll all make sense anyway.

Oh, and I’m in South Jersey, which was just hit by a nor’easter last week, and still looks like God got plastered on eggnog while doing His decorating and blasted the state with tree flocking.

Why this vid kicks ass: There are so few Eureka fanvids that I was excited when I came across it, only to discover that it's no longer there. lidi was kind enough to re-upload it when I asked, and I'm glad that she did. I liked the song choice--it works for Stark, who's not the romantic type and probably never wanted to fall in love, let alone twice. I think the vid captures the homoerotic nature of the love triangle. (Actually, I don't know why there isn't more OT3 fanwork in this fandom, but that's besides the point.)

Parts I particularly liked:
1:10 - the juxtaposition of the lyrics with the image of Stark between Allison and Jack
2:30 - Stark in the car with Jack, which, without context, looks like he's upset about falling in love with Jack, too

Why this must be read: This story is so very good on so many levels, I don't even know where to begin.

I didn't realize it was a Christmas story until I was already into it (although that's why I'm making sure to rec it today), but I love the author's use of the Season. Christmas is supposed to be about family and memories, but the former is denied to Nathan while he's stuck reliving the later.

I admire how blackmamba_esq uses the time-travel element as well. I like how it ties into the fractured nature of the the story-telling, just like how present experiences can make us recall memories in a non-linear way--one situation can make us remember something past which brings forth a completely separate memory, which is paralleled in the way Nathan is travelling through time. The sci-fi/fantasy element becomes a metaphor for a real-world emotion, one that is particularly strong during the holidays, which I think is the best way genre writing can be used.

OK - I'm rambling. Let's just say: It made me laugh. It made me cry. It made me think about past mistakes.

Why this must be read:


The title given is actually the title of the journal entry, as the fic itself is – probably for the excellent reason that it needs no title – nameless. For this is the one and only Wimsey mpreg fic in existence, brought to you as a special treat for Christmas Day. Mpreg definitely falls into the "more than" category of fanfic – any story using this trope is manifestly not attempting to fill in the gaps in canon, continue canon, or otherwise have anything more than the kind of relationship to canon that Lord Peter has to the disreputable Death Bredon. And yet even crack requires skill at both style and characterisation, since the pleasure derives from seeing how so wildly inappropriate a narrative element can be treated in a convincingly Wimseyish fashion. This story pulls off both a terrific Sayers narrative voice, and spot-on characterisation – because of course if Lord Peter were to find himself pregnant after having sex with an alien in a dubious Viennese night club, this is how he would react. As a bonus for the thoroughly depraved, there is a Bunter mpreg version here.

‘I confess, my lord, that the possibility of such an explanation for your lordship’s recent condition had not occurred to me.’

‘You don’t think anyone else suspects?’

‘I believe that would be most unlikely, my lord.’

‘I’m glad to hear that at least.’

Why this must be read: It sounds fairly silly on the surface: Nick teaches LaCroix to drive on his precious Duesenberg while Janette tags along. Then, hilarity ensues. This story is set immediately after the flashback from 'Father's Day' and further builds on the claustrophobia Nick feels with his "family". It's a wonderful read that showcases the dynamic between our favorite vampirc trio and come on, Nick, LaCroix and Janette all looked breathtakingly beautiful in their 1920s garb, so all that is icing on the cake when it comes to visualizing this story.
